I still remember my grandmother’s saying, “Be careful what you ask for, you might just get it.” Looking back, I wish I had understood it better as a kid. Rather than listing all the times I got what I wanted—some amazing, some not so great—I’m sure you’ve experienced the highs and lows of seemingly perfect plans yourself.
The Role of Mentorship in My Life
Throughout my life, I have looked for outstanding mentors to assist me in becoming a better man, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Fortunately, I’ve been blessed with incredible individuals who push me to excel in these capacities.
Lessons from a Recent Trip
Prior to a recent trip, I reflected on the participants—fighter pilots, senior Marine officers, corporate executives—all exceptionally intelligent and successful individuals. Recognizing an opportunity to learn from over 600 years of combined experience, I chose to listen attentively. We delved into profound conversations about resilience, mental health, coping mechanisms, leadership, mentorship, marriage, friendship, and several other matters. My decision to listen closely led to acquiring invaluable insights and lessons.
A Memorable Lesson on Leadership
The most significant moment during our three days of conversation came from a Marine Colonel discussing leadership. He quoted renowned Air Force Pilot John Boyd:
“To be somebody or to do something. In life, there is often a roll call. That is, you will constantly be asked to make a decision: are you going to be somebody important or are you going to do something important?”
The Colonel recounted how, early in his career, he decided to “do something” rather than merely “be somebody.” He took on responsibilities as a devoted husband, father, Marine, leader, and commander, often making significant sacrifices to stay true to his choice of contributing meaningfully rather than simply conforming.
Unexpected Mentorship Moments
Mentors often emerge when least expected. Unaware that I was paying attention, this Marine’s words deeply influenced me as I listened and learned. Early in my own life, I knew I wanted to do something meaningful for my country, city, family, and myself.
Finding Inspiration for Spoken Outdoors
In November 2023, while relaxing on my hotel deck in Hawaii and looking out over the ocean, I pondered a fitting tagline for Spoken Outdoors. After hours of writing and refining ideas, “SERVICE. HEALING. HOPE” emerged as the perfect choice. Spoken Outdoors is dedicated to serving our communities, fostering healing, and instilling hope. John Boyd captured this sentiment well: “Be someone or do something.”
Spoken Outdoors (a 501(c)(3) organization) serves America’s Protectors by hosting events throughout the U.S. focusing on outdoor experiences that educate, stretch boundaries, challenge limits, and create confidence. Sign up for our newsletter, visit our website, and donate today.
